First Time Home in Twenty Years

BOOK 17

Telemachus goes home and sees his mother, Odysseus comes later in the form of a beggar and sees his dog Argos, Argos recognizes Odysseus and dies.

Telemachus goes home and is welcomed by his mother and nurse Eurycleia. At home, he meets Theoclymenus and Piraeus and asks Piraeus to keep the gifts Menalaus gave him for he fears the suitors may kill him for it. Then Telemachus tells his mother what little he learned about his father on his trip to Pylos and Sparta; however, he does not reveal he has seen his father at Eumaeus’s hut. Theoclymenus speaks and swears Odysseus is in Ithaca now. In the meantime, Odysseus and Eumaeus leave for town and are met on the way by Melanthius a companion of the suitor’s, and he heaps scorn on the two and kicks Odysseus. The two arrive at the house, Odysseus sees his hunting dog Argos on a dung heap plagued with flees, and Argos recognizes his master and dies. When Odysseus gets to his house he his welcomed rudely by the suitors, insulted by Antinous to which Odyssues answers back, for this Antinous strikes Odysseus with a stool. Penelope hears of this and Eumaeus leaves for his hut leaving Odysseus alone with Telemachus and the suitors.

Bingman Pond Revisited

Last week I walked through Bingman Park, that is close to our home, a storm pasted though the area the night before, and lighting struck this stump.
and this was the result

It was still smoldering, when I walked by.
The seasons are starting to change, there are more leaves on the ground.
Whenever I walk through this park where are always things that I had not noticed before.

There is a stable that borders on the park, this guy came to say hello.

We do not live that far from a major Interstate highway in the Seattle/Tacoma area in Western Washington.

Clouds and sun

Love this time of year

At The Cove we were actually attending a wedding, the park have a stream nearby and some flowers, I slippped away to get a few photos

This stream may have salmon returning this fall and winter I'll have to come and check that out.

Sweetie and I took a little side trip on the way home and got these photos close to sundown.

Odysseus and Telemaches Meet

It has been sometime since I have posted anything about The Odyssey, here are some notes on Book 16

BOOK 16

Odysseus and Telemachus meet in the hut of the swineherd; they plan how to kill the suitors.

Odysseus and Eumaeus are preparing breakfast, when someone approaches; however, the dogs are not barking and carrying on as dogs sometimes do. Eumaeus goes the door and sees that it is Telemachus, they exchange greetings and Telemachus asks about his Mother. Is she is still at the house or has married on of the suitors? Eumaeus says she is still at the house grieving and weeping continually. They sit down and eat when Telemachus asks “Where does this stranger comes from?” Eumaeus answeres that is a Cretan escaping a Thesprotian ship and remember that he is your suppliant. Telemachus instructs Eumaeus to go to town and tell his mother that he has returned, and have her send the message to Laertes. After Eumaeus departs, Athene makes herself visible to Odysseus, changes his appearance and makes himself known to his son. They have a tearful reunion and begin planning overtaking the suitors.

Two Parks and aTrail

Last Sunday walk took me to two parks and a trail, here are their web addresses;
http://www.seattle.gov/parks/park_detail.asp?ID=468
http://www5.kingcounty.gov/reports/parkinfo/getParkInfo.asp?PID=2562,Lakewood%20Park
http://www.burienwa.gov/index.aspx?NID=381
The first park was Westcrest park, it is a Hugh park with an off lease area for our canine friends. Also the Duwamish green belt starts there with lots of trails, here are some photos.

Next I walked to Lakewood Park a couple of miles away to the south.

The park has a small lake, so there were the usual geese and ducks swimming around.

Then this guy flew in and it was fun to observe him.

Then it was on to Salmon Creek Ravine, there was no signs or anything, just a trail off the street.

The trail goes down the ravine, there is a sewage treatment at the end of the ravine, so it can get smelly.

Entrance to the trail at the bottom of the ravine.
